過去Michele曾是資優生、啦啦隊長、也是選美皇后，年輕時她透過摩門教認識未來的丈夫Martin。當年只有19歲的他們一同前往猶他州鹽湖城附近的城市─普萊森特格羅夫，展開新生活。
Martin從醫之外也是一名律師，還曾在地方耶穌基督末世聖徒教會當過教士，MacNeill夫妻享有高社會地位，受人尊敬。他們陸續生了4名兒女，又從烏克蘭領養另外3個孩子，最小的孩子的真實身分則是孫女。
一家之主Martin用光鮮亮麗的外表掩蓋他的謊言，他和女子Gypsy Willis發生婚外情。然而他被名聲所困、無法拋妻棄子，終於對自己的妻子動了殺機。一開始如果事情不如他意，他便不斷以自殺要脅Michele。太太則盡一切努力維持即將支離破碎的婚姻，但她怎樣都沒想到枕邊人的冷血精心算計。
2007年3月，Martin提議Michele去做臉部拉提整形手術，起初她因血壓問題而拒絕，但經過丈夫的花言巧語，為了挽救兩人的婚姻生活，她最後同意了。Martin跟去Michele的最後一次術前會診，給醫師一串止痛藥名單，包含通常不會給病人的強力藥劑。
隔月，Michele做完手術回家，其中一位女兒Alexis發現母親失去意識，Martin則承認他可能不小心讓她服藥過量。在這之後Alexis幫忙管理母親的藥物。
即使如此，事情並沒有受到控制，約一週後，警方接到Martin報案，宣稱他一回家就發現Michele面朝下躺在浴缸的水裡，醫護人員趕到時已回天乏術，宣布50歲的Michele死亡。聞知妻子死訊的Martin扮演悲痛欲絕的丈夫，當場哀號哭泣，但年紀較大的孩子們和Michele的家人都起了疑心。
短短兩週後，Martin將情婦Gypsy帶進門，向家人解釋這是他雇用的保姆，而兩人竟然共睡一間臥房。
過了3年，警方才將Michele的死因從「意外」改成「不確定」。再過兩年，Martin被逮捕，他不承認殺妻。檢察官點出疑點：他在報案電話中說他有執行CPR急救，但檢驗結果發現他說謊─他先讓妻子服藥過量，然後把她臉朝下放進浴缸水裡，甚至有可能把她強壓下去。
檢方表示這是一場「近乎完美的謀殺」。但許多人紛紛出庭作證Martin居心不良─以前另一位外遇對象說，Martin曾告訴她，他有能力用心臟衰竭掩飾謀殺；一位犯人說，Martin向他承認自己殺妻；Gypsy也出面承認兩人的關係從Michele死前持續到死後；30歲的女兒Alexis則揭發父親的獸行，Martin在太太死後5週溜上她的床性虐她。女兒Rachel懇求庭上嚴厲審判，最後陪審團判他性虐罪15年徒刑，一級謀殺罪終身監禁。

原文出處 : Michele Marie MacNeill, née Somers, (born 1957) was an American murder victim. Michele was married for nearly 30 years to physician Martin MacNeill and was the mother of eight children. She died in Pleasant Grove, Utah on April 11, 2007 following recovery from cosmetic surgery performed eight days earlier. At her husband's request, the operating surgeon prescribed four medicines for Michele's recovery; two of the drugs, Diazepam and Oxycodone, would not normally be prescribed to his patients.
Michele had been concerned during her recovery that Martin was having an affair and that she had been given medication by him inappropriately. Her daughter Alexis, a medical student at that time, then took responsibility for giving Michele her medicine. Michele recovered sufficiently for Alexis return to school and Michele died the following day. Initially, police and autopsy reports concluded that Michele died of cardiovascular disease, but after being pressed to review of the toxicology report, the state's chief medical examiner found that the combination of medicines in her body could have contributed to cardiac death.
During the trial, which began, on October 17, 2013, Chief Prosecutor Chad Grunander stated: "'It was an almost perfect murder, MacNeill pumped her full of drugs' that he knew would be difficult to detect once she was dead." Martin MacNeill was convicted of Michele's murder and obstruction of justice in a widely publicized case involving marital infidelity, sexual abuse, and outward religious devotion.
